I think it’s appropriate to share a few words about my decision to go vegan in January, 2014.

I honestly didn’t think about eating animals that much. I had a lot of other issues concerning food and control without the baggage of animal cruelty. I grew up on a farm and did not make the connection between the life in front of me and the death on my plate.

When I got over the messy history with food and moved out on my own, I started listening to podcasts which piqued my interest in sports nutrition. I had been running for a while, but never gave diet much thought to not only running better, but feeling better on those runs.

I started listening to the Rich Roll podcast and remember one episode very distinctly, the one in which he interviewed Gene Baur of Farm Sanctuary. In the episode, Gene describes the horror that goes on inside a factory farm and the problems that stem from eating animal products.

I was forever scarred. Immediately I started buying local eggs and meat and all that jazz, but didn’t make the connection yet. Fast forward a year or so and I was in college still listening to the podcast and it referenced the book The Omnivores Dilemma by Michael Pollan and Eating Animals by Jonathon Saffron Foer. I read both those books, my life changed.

I just couldn’t consume meat, eggs or cheese without seeing the horrible things described in those books. I researched them and looked up all the claims made in each and they were all true. Another thing I found, animals can feel pain. They have a life too and it is cruel to take that away for any reason, especially when it is unnecessary.

I researched vegan athletes and what do you know, you can get everything you need without consuming animal products at all! How amazing is that? Not only is it possible, many athletes claim they thrive when switching! Looking at why that is would take a really long post, so I encourage you to check out the books mentioned above as well as

At the end of it all, I phased animal products out of my diet (yogurt was the last to go) and except for a lapse or two due to my disdain for waste, I haven’t looked back.

Going vegan was the best decision of my life. I’ve met so many amazing people, read so many books and articles and most importantly, saved countless innocent lives. I am a happier, healthier person.
